New A&P Market Completed in Mansfield Commons

Exterior walls erected in eight days

LANGHORN, PA—October 3, 2000 - Strescon Industries offers a fresh and clean precast concrete façade to the recently opened A&P Supermarket in Mansfield, New Jersey. The construction of the A&P Supermarket displayed precast concrete's versatility by utilizing a Split Face Block Imprint exterior wall that is aesthetic and provides structural support.

Approximately 23,000 square feet of precast walls stretch around the rear and two sides of the structure, which required 107 pieces of the standard wall panels (26 feet high and 8 inches wide). "A clean work-site and an expedient construction erection are always a plus when building a new store," according to Michael Woods, project architect with Richard L. Bowen and Associates of Cleveland, Ohio. "Precast concrete wall panels do not produce the block and mortar residue that a masonry job can produce, which helps to provide for a very clean and efficient work site. Precast can also make designing the building cost effective, because the panels provide insulating value and structural support."

The particular style used at the A&P Supermarket incorporates a Split Face finish, replicating a traditional hand laid block wall. Mr. Woods noted that "achieving an accurate color scheme with the front of the building was not really an issue for this project. The painted finish was clean, professional and blended perfectly with the rest of the store. The sharp and consistent finish of the wall panels easily upheld the authentic image of the entire Mansfield Commons shopping center."

Strescon Industries is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Precast Association, formed in 1978 by producers of precast/prestressed concrete products serving New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Its mission is to strengthen communications between industry design professionals and contractors. The association also develops industry standards for quality in building with precast/prestressed concrete.
